An engineer of light, color, and geometry, Simeti uses his monochrome shaped canvases to explore the formal properties of and relationship between light and color. Exemplified by Un Ovale Rosso (1967), his works present an outstanding dynamism and grace with forms protruding into viewers’ space, creating an active viewing experience. Subtle and often understated, his works are always lively in their textured surfaces, saturated colors, and masterful light and shadow effects. They pioneered the now established idea that paintings can be three-dimensional objects.
