Pith 58 was created in 2004, the year Truitt passed away. It demonstrates the forceful creativity that Anne Truitt pursued throughout her career as an artist. Seemingly laid down in a casual manner, the pure black acrylic pigment on the canvas displays a high level of sophistication — the central rectangular area is painted down with visible brushstrokes, whereas the edge is formed by thick pigment giving the work a sculptural presence. The loose “strings” further give an impression of the work as “textile” rather than a flat surface of acrylic paint. In other words, Truitt is exploring a commonly-seen painting material in a drastically physical manner that expands viewer’s experience and challenges one to imagine what can be done on a traditional canvas surface.
